A Little Noisy, but Healthy

This morning, I sat quietly cradling my warm coffee, still smiling over the wonderfully ordinary verdict my cardiologist handed down yesterday.

"Your heart is fine. It’s a little noisy, but it’s healthy. There’s absolutely no reason to change a thing."

A little noisy.

I love that so much. My heart isn’t a pristine, silent, high-performance sports car. It’s basically a reliable old station wagon with a noisy lifter, but still gets you exactly where you need to go.

Isn't that the truth for almost all of us? We aren't meant to be silent, perfectly calibrated machines. We murmur. We creak. We carry emotional dents, questionable life choices, and beautiful, winding stories that shaped who we are. Yet, we've somehow convinced ourselves that we need a major system upgrade before we’re allowed to actually step out of the garage and enjoy the drive.

Opening my journal this morning, my brain immediately defaulted to its favorite hobby: Strategic Self-Optimization. What is wrong? What can I fix? My pen was poised to draft a five-point plan to aggressively cure my flaws by next Tuesday.

But then, a softer, slightly lazy question interrupted.

Why?

Why do we treat our lives like corporate Excel sheets that absolutely must show 10% growth every quarter? Why can't I just wrap my arms around this slightly messy, beautifully average moment, exactly as it is?

We spend so much of our precious, fleeting energy aggressively reaching for the next milestone: A slightly faster run (so we can collapse in a more impressive time) A shinier job title (to impress people we don't even like at parties) Better weather (because 24 C and partly cloudy is somehow a personal insult)

A "better" version of ourselves, one who probably drinks green juice, meditates for two hours, and always puts away everything, leaving a tidy pristine space!

There is always another mountain to climb. But honestly? Who decided we all have to be mountaineers?

"More" and "better" make wonderful guides, but incredibly obnoxious masters. They’re like pushy personal trainers, sure, they get you moving, but they’re also yelling in your face while you’re just trying to enjoy a bagel.

When we let them run the show, they quietly steal the most precious thing we have: the beauty of being present. They whisper that today is just a crappy waiting room we have to endure until we reach some mythical, flawless future.

But life isn’t waiting for us in the "next." It’s happening right here.

In this lukewarm coffee. This morning light filtering through the window. This wonderfully chaotic, squeaky-toy of a heart.

What if, just for today, we called a truce with our flaws?

What if we decided not to edit, upgrade, or aggressively curate a single thing? What if we just looked at this noisy, imperfect version of our lives and decided to love it anyway?

Tomorrow will inevitably bring new goals to pursue, new lessons to learn, and new ways to feel slightly inadequate. But tomorrow can wait in the hallway.

Because today isn't a dress rehearsal or a stepping stone to your real life.

Today is where we live.
